Always Amazing Produce in Great Southern

On 6 - 8 November a group of us enjoyed three days at farms, attractions and restaurants as part of the 2017 Taste Great Southern Spring Tour. The visit to the region for journalists was again enlightening for all, with the introduction to some amazing produce!

The region always has a lot to show off! It again highlighted the fact that it is truly a gourmet destination and one that is well worth the trip to the amazing south coast.

We started in Denmark and worth putting on your list is a trip to Elephant Rock Cider (including The Toffee Factory and A Bit on the Side) where you can enjoy some great gourmet treats. Then the boutique Stash Coffee Roastery was amazing where we learnt a bit more on producing great coffee. Look out for their brand at local cafes!

Always a pleasure was the visit to The Lake House Denmark where we not only enjoyed some great shared platters of local produce including an amazing braised shoulder of lamb, but checked out the increasing range of award winning Vino Foods.

No stop in Denmark is complete without at least a breakfast at Mrs Jones Café, where we started our second day before heading off to the fledgling farm of Denmark Grass Fed Lamb. We watched the contented and healthy lambs feeding on the lush pastures while getting some great information on the new venture. Their lamb is available at local restaurants and can be ordered online.

In moving onto Albany, we stopped off at Oranje Tractor, where Murray took us through the organic orchard, tasting treats on the way, followed by a wine flight with Pam. We recommend the orchard tour!

Liberte’s Amy Hamilton did not disappoint with lunch, being treated to a six-course seasonal tasting including new season oysters from Ocean Foods. Our favourite was the Broad Beans and Fresh Peas with pickled nasturtiums, prosciutto cracker and quails egg (pictured).

To finish Tuesday (before tucking in at The Beach House at Bayside) we enjoyed the company of Matt at Wilson’s Brewing finding out more about his great brews and long- term ambitions for the company.

Our dinner at Due South started off by enjoying the fantastic cured meats as part of the well presented charcuterie, then were spoilt with local oysters, marron, King George Whiting and a crab salad, finishing with petit fours.

The last day was spent at three venues in the Mt Barker / Porongurup area starting with a tasting of some aged Riesling at Galafrey Wines (who turned 40 this year), then a stunning lunch of very local foods at Zarapheth Wines which included smoked trout, avacados with salads of wasabi leaves and watercress supplemented by the herbs and vegetables from the kitchen garden.

Our final stop was at Porongurup Pure, a mainly sheep dairy which produces some amazing milk, yoghurt and cheeses. The young family business is about to launch into some buffalo cheese too, once they convince the cows to give up some of their milk.
