Gurps’s love and passion for food began at an early age, while growing up in beautiful Dehradun. Dehradun also known as Doon Valley is situated between the rivers Ganges and Yamuna in the Himalayan Ranges.
Gurps has the greatest memories of growing up in a family of amazing cooks, surrounded by exotic spices and ingredients that came from the fertile land of Doon Valley.
Passionate and committed to share the cuisine and knowledge of his culture, Gurps made a decision to switch career from computers to cooking.
His career started at Maya in Fremantle which built an unsurpassed reputation and was considered an Icon of Fremantle and beyond. What started as a humble family diner won several industry accolades including Five Gold Plates, Prix De Honnour, AMX - Customer Service Award, Micro Business Award for Fremantle, Gourmet Traveller - Top Ten Restaurants WA, The West Australian Good Food Guide - Best Indian Restaurant, RCIA - Best Indian WA and RCIA - Best Indian Restaurant in Australia to name a few.
In 2015 Gurps was given an opportunity to launch Sauma in the Perth Cultural Precinct of Northbridge and revitalise a key location with significant heritage and cultural values.
Gurps has cemented his reputation in the eclectic hub of Northbridge. His ethos and vision of showcasing local growers and producers married with his passion of regional Indian cuisine passed down from an intragenerational family of amazing cooks ensures that Sauma will continue to share the family passion for Indian food while showcasing their local region.
